Notes

Knit in rounds, right side facing you. As you pass from one needle to the next give the yarn a firm tug and keep it taut for the first two stiches. This will prevent loose stitches.

Marker is placed after first two stiches on needle 1 to secure it from dropping.

Pattern

Using cable method cast on 96 stitches to spare needle.

Work 1 row in K2, P2 ribbing.

Knit 32 stitches onto each of three needles. Arrange needles to form a triangle, checking there is no twist in cast on.

Needle 1 begins each round, noted by a stich marker.

Work 7 rounds of ribbing, placing marker after first two stitches.

Knit 20 rounds of Stocking Stitch.

Finishing

Cut yarn, leaving a length for darning in end.

Thread end through needle.

Moving in the direction you were knitting, pass needle through each stitch and slip off knitting needle.

Draw stitches together, closing hole.

Push needle down through centre to wrong side and darn in yarn securely in a circular manner.

Weave in yarn end left at beginning of hat.

Hand wash in non-perfumed lather. Rinse 3 times. Spread to shape on clean tea-towel. Roll up and gently twist to remove excess water. Style over a suitable shape (glass jug, small ceramic pudding bowl). Dry inside near sunny window. A convenient way to do this is to fold a towel in three; place upon a chair and sit shape on this.
