Hood for Infant or Doll

From The Lady's Book of Knitting (1886) published in Boston.


1 ounce of two-fold Zephr (baby weight wool)

Knit on small needles (suggest 2.75mm)

Silk ribbon


Begin at crown. Cast on 32 stitches; knit 7 rows twist stitch (which is done by knitting through the back part of the stitch, instead of front as in ordinary knitting).

Row 8: Purl.

Row 9: Knit.

Row 10. Purl.

Row 11: Knit 2 *yo, knit 2 together* repeat across.

Row 12: Purl.

Row 13: Knit.

Row 14: Purl.

Repeat these 14 rows 3 times (42 rows). Cut yarn.

Begin on right-hand side: Pick up 26 stitches, knit 32 across top of crown-piece, pick up 26 stitches on other side (this forms the front of hood). Knit same as crown, repeating the 14 rows 3 times, with the addition of 7 rows twist stitch, then cast off.

Pick up the neck, for frill, 84 stitches.

Row 1: Knit.

Row 2: Knit 2, *yo knit 2 together* repeat across.

Row 3: Knit.

Row 4: Knit.

Row 5: Purl.

Row 6: Twist stitch. Cast off.


Row 1: 6 treble in one stitch, double crochet in 4th stitch; this forms a scallop.

Row 2: 1 treble, 2 chain, 1 treble in centre of each scallop, 2 chains between.

Row 3: 6 treble in chain of preceding row, double crochet between.

Run ribbon in second crochet row, and in each open row (eyelets) on hood.
