1 pair knitting needles No. UK 9/US 5/Metric 3.75mm

1 pair knitting Needles No. UK 7/US  7/Metric 4.5mm

6 buttons

TENSION

5½ stitches to 1 inch

ABBREVIATIONS

knit; p. purl; sts. stitches; sl.1 slip one stitch knitways; tog. together; st.st. stocking stitch (1 row knit, 1 row purl); wl. fwd. wool forward.

After casting off stitches for shaping, one stitch will remain on the right-hand needle which is not included in the instructions that follow.

N.B. For the 16 inch length read the instructions as given. For the 18 inch length read the figures within the first brackets. For the 20 inch length read the figures within the second brackets.

MEASUREMENTS

Width all round at underarm 12 [14] [16] inches

Length from top of shoulder 11 [13] [15] inches

Length of sleeve seam (with cuff turned back) 3 [4] [5] inches

PATTERN

Using the No. 7 needles cast on 90 [100] [110] sts.

1st Row: SI.1, knit to end of row

Repeat the 1st row 5 times

Proceed as follows:

1st Row: SI.1, knit to end of row

2nd Row: SI.1, k.4, purl to the last 5 sts., k.5

These 2 rows form the st.st. and front borders

Repeat the 1st and 2nd rows 8 [10] [12] times

Next row: SI.1, k.1, cast off 2 sts., knit to end of row

Next row: SI.1, k.4, purl to the last 3 sts., k.1, cast on 2 sts., k.2

Repeat the 1st and 2nd rows 4 [5] [6] times **

Repeat from ** to ** once

Next row: SI.1, k.1, cast off 2 sts., knit to end of row

Next row: SI.1, k.4, purl to the last 3 sts., k.1, cast on 2 sts., k.2

Repeat the 1st and 2nd rows 2 [3] [4] times

Next row: SI.1, k.4 [7] [8], * k.2 tog., k.2 [3] [4], repeat from * to the last 5 [2] [5] sts., k.5 [2] [5], 70 [82] [94] sts

Proceed as follows:

1st Row: SI.1, knit to end of row

Repeat the 1st row twice

4th Row: SI.1, k.1, cast off 2 sts., * wl. fwd., k.2 tog., repeat from * to the last 5 sts., k.5

5th Row: SI.1, knit to the last 2 sts., cast on 2 sts., k.2

Repeat the 1st row twice

Keeping the continuity of the st.st. and the front borders work 4 [6] [8] rows in st.st.

Divide for the Back and Fronts.

Next row: SI.1, k.16 [19] [21], cast off 4 [4] [6] sts.. k.27 [33] [37], cast off 4 [4] [6] sts., k.16 [19] [21], turn

Working on the first 17 [20] [22] sts. only, proceed as follows:

THE LEFT FRONT

1st Row: SI.1, k.4, purl to the last St., k.1

Keeping the continuity of the st.st. and the front border (throughout) decrease once at the armhole edge in each of the next 2 [2] [4] rows. 15 [18] [18] sts

Work 11 [13] [13] rows without shaping.

Decrease once at the neck edge in each of the next 2 rows. 9 [11] [11] sts.

Work 2 [2] [4] rows in st.st. without shaping.

Cast off.

THE BACK

With the wrong side of the work facing, rejoin the wool to the first 28 [34] [38] sts. and proceed as follows:

1st Row: K.1, purl to the last st., k.1

Decrease once at each end of each of the next 2 [2] [4] rows. 24 [30] [30] sts.

Work 16 [18] [20] rows in st.st. without shaping.

Cast off.

THE RIGHT FRONT

With the wrong side of the work facing, rejoin the wool to the remaining 17 [20] [22] sts. and proceed as follows:

1st Row: K.1, purl to the last 5 sts., k.5

2nd Row: SI.1, k.1, cast off 2 sts., knit to the last 2 sts., k.2 tog

3rd Row: K.2 tog., purl to the last 3 sts., k.1, cast on 2 sts., k.2. 15 [18] [20] sts

For the 20 inch only:

Keeping the continuity of the front border decrease once at the armhole edge in each of the next 2 rows. (18 sts.)

Shape the Neck:

1st Row: Cast off 4 [5] [5] sts., knit to end of row

2nd Row: SI.1, purl to the last St., k.1

Decrease once at the neck edge in each of the next 2 rows. 9 [11] [11] sts.

Work 3 [3] [5] rows without shaping.

Cast off purlways.

THE COLLAR

Using the No. 7 needles cast on 40 [42] [44] sts.

1st Row: SI.1, knit to end of row

Repeat the 1st row 12 times.

Cast off.

THE SLEEVES (Both alike)

Using the No. 9 needles cast on 19 [22] [25] sts.

1st Row: SI.1, knit to end of row

Repeat the 1st row 10 times.

Change to No. 7 needles and proceed as follows:

1st Row: SI.1, knit to end of row

2nd Row: SI.1, purl to the last st., k.1

Continue in st.st. increasing once at each end of the next and every following 6th row until there are 25 [30] [33] sts. on the needle.

(It is advisable to check the length of the doll’s arm before proceeding as they vary considerably; then proceed for the required length or as follows:)

Continue without shaping until the work measures 4 [5] [6] inches from the com­mencement, ending on the wrong side of the work.

SHAPE THE TOP

Cast off 2 sts. at the beginning of each of the next 4 [4] [4] rows.

Cast off 1 st. at the beginning of each of the next 10 [14 [18] rows.

Cast off the remaining 7 [8] [7].

 TO MAKE UP THE DRESSING GOWN

Press each piece separately on the wrong side under a damp cloth with a hot iron.

Sew up the shoulder and sleeve seams. Placing the sleeve seam to the centre of the cast off sts. at the armhole, sew the sleeve in position. With the right side of the collar to the wrong side of the work and the ends of the collar 3 sts. in from the front edge, sew the cast off edge to the neck.

Sew on buttons to correspond with the buttonholes.

Using 4 strands of wool make a twisted cord 36 inches long and thread through the holes at the waist. Attach a tassel to each end of the cord.

Press all seams. Turn back the cuffs.

Secret Hand Mirror Adornment Free Crochet Pattern

MATERIALS

American Thread Aunt Lydias Heavy Rug Yarn: 1 x 70 yard skein each White and Pink
(Originally 50% Rayon/50% Cotton, then nylon was used in the blend. See suggested yarn at end of post.)

Plastic Crochet Hook Size US H-8/UK 8/Metric 3.75 to 4.00mm

1 Hand Mirror 6 ¼ inches in diameter

Scrap of Black Felt

PATTERN

With White ch 2, 6 s c in 2nd st from hook, do not join this or following rounds. Place a marker at beg of each round.

2nd Round: 2 s c in each s c.

3rd Round: * 1 s c in next s c, 2 s c in next s c, repeat from * all around.

4th ROUND: * 1 s c in each of the next 2 s c, 2 s c in next s c, repeat from * all around.

5th ROUND: * 1 s c in each of the next 3 s c, 2 s c in next s c, repeat from * all around.

6th to 10th Rounds: Continue in same manner having 1 more st between each increase in each row (60 sts).

11th ROUND: 1 s c in each s c, cut yarn.

EDGE

With wrong side of work facing, attach Pink in any s c of the 10th round, and working over s c of 11th round, work 1 double loop st in each s c (double loop st: insert hook in st, winding yarn clock wise, wind yarn twice around index finger, insert hook from left to right through loops on finger, pick up both loops and pull through st, drop loops from finger, yo and pull through all loops on hook). Cut yarn.

BACK FACING

Attach Pink in any 5 and work 1 s c in each of the next 52 sl leaving 8 sts free for handle, ch 1, turn

2nd ROW: 1 s c in each s c, cut yarn

EARRINGS

With Pink, ch 2, 8 s c in 15 st of ch, do not join this or following rounds. Place a marker at beg of each round.

Next Two Rounds: 1 s c in each s c cut yarn, leaving a length. Fill slightly with cotton and draw sts tog at top. At tach yarn at top and ch 6, fasten to cover cut yarn.

BANGS (FRINGE)

Wind Pink 25 times over a 1 inch ruler. Stitch across top, slip off ruler and stitch in place to front as illustrated.

FINISHING

Finish face as illustrated in felt. Lace a length of yarn through last row of back facing, place cover on mirror, draw tog and tie. Tie strands of yarn in bow as illustrated.
