TENSION

11 ½ stitches and 15 ½ rows with Double Knitting, measured over 2 inches (5cm) in stocking stitch.

NOTE

Join seams neatly on right side and brush White parts lightly with a wire brush for fluffy effect. Carry yarns when not in use loosely up side of work.

2 skeins pearl embroidery

Woolydown for filling (soft wool)

Cotton, a firm weave fabric for body in cream (see instructions)

Face 2 ½ inches, purchased or made from pure wool felt (glass eyes and painted mouth give a sparkling look to a hanging doll). Shape wet felt over a plastic doll face. When dry and stuffed it will fill out,

6 golden jingle bells

¼ yard narrow elastic (for hanging)

Small plastic ring (for hanging)

THE COAT

Always knit into back of each cast on stitch, also in to first and last stitch of every row.

Commence at lower edge of front, casting on 36 stitches.

TO MAKE UP

Pin out each piece and press on wrong side under a damp cloth with a hot iron. Brush each piece well on right side. Sew up side and leg seams Stuff lower part of each leg with wooly­down for about 2 inches and catch down to form feet and sew a tiny bell to each point.

MAKE THE BODY

Cut 2 pieces of material 6 ½ inches in length, 4 ½ inches wide at lower edge and shape off to 3 ½ inches at top. Join up sides and lower edge also about ½ an inch each side at top, then stuff very tightly with woolydown. Place the top part of legs over the lower part of body and sew, then catch along the top of each leg.

Sew up under-arm, sleeve and hand seams Stuff each little hand­piece, then catch round top to form wrist.

Using pearl embroidery work blanket-stitch round lower edge and neck. Sew a tiny bell to point of each sleeve.

Place the coat over the body then fix head in position and sew firmly. Fold down the decreased edge of hat and sew each side for 2 ½ inches. Using embroidery thread work blanket stitch round neck and face. Stuff each point and top of hat with woolydown then place in position on head and sew round neck and face. Sew a bell to each point of hat. Sew a piece of elastic with the bone ring to lop of hat.

Press very lightly on wrong side using a warm iron and damp cloth. Fold over neckband at row of holes and stitch down on wrong side to form picot hem. Using a flat seam join border to main part stitching along lower edge and sides, easing in fullness at corners. Stitch along ends of border on right side of work where they overlap Fronts. Stitch over­laps for 1 inch from lower edge of Fronts on wrong side of work, thus forming slots for arms. Thread ribbon through rows of holes on yoke and Fronts and through hem at neck.

Fondly remembered from many childhood play-days is this simple pattern for a “teddy” koala. (Knitted by mothers who could not buy the expensive store variety.) We all romped with these and got them for Christmas presents. Some were sky blue. Warragul is the Aboriginal word for dingo.

Holding fabric firmly and using a teasel or fine wire brush, brush all pieces of fabric on right side taking care not to pull stitches.

Stitch ear linings into position round edges of ears leaving inside seams free. Stuff ears, then stitch down inside seams.

To form nose-seam start at 2 cast-off sts, fold in half and join seam.

Stitch 18 cast-on sts of head to 18 cast-off sts at top of back, then join side seams of head to ear linings.

Stitch base into position. Stuff well.

Stitch on eyes.

Join cast-off edge of front to lower edge of head.

Block each piece by pinning out round edges. Press each piece very lightly usung a warm iron and damp cloth.

Using a flat seam join scalloped edges of Borders. Fold centre piece in half through colour division and stitch Border pieces on to matching half of centre, easing in fullness at point. Join ends of Border. Catch stitch double edges of centre inside faggot stitched Border. Tie ribbon through faggot stitched Border at ends of wrap half an inch from edge.

Work K. 1, P. 1 rib for 1 inch.

Next row: Make holes for ribbon thus: K. 1 * M. 1, K. 2 tog. * repeat * to * to

last st., K. 1.

Change to No. 10 needles.

Next row: K. 15, turn and work 1½ inches in st.st. (1 row K., 1 row P.) on these sts., ending on a P. row.

SHOES

Cast on 12 sts. and work in garter st. (every row K. ) increasing 1 st. at each end of every alternate row until 24 sts are on needle.

Take 2 tog. at each end of every alternate row until 12 sts. remain. (This piece is for the sole.)

At the end of last row cast on 6 sts. for heel.

Continue on these 18 sts., keeping the heel edge straight and increasing 1st. at

the other edge on every alternate row (for the toe) until 24 sts. are on needle.

Next row: Cast off 12 sts., K. to end.

Work 13 rows in double moss st. (as given for coat ), on the remaining 12 sts., casting on 12 sts., at the end of last row.

Continue in garter st., keeping heel edge straight, decreasing 1 st. at toe edge on every alternate row until 18 sts. remain.

Cast off.

Sew tog. the two straight edges of heel and sew tog. the edges round the sole, easing in toe.

Straps:

Knit up 16 sts. at heel (8 sts. on each side of join).

Cast on 12 sts. K. back and cast on 12 sts. at other edge.

Work 2 rows in garter st.

Next row: K. 2, yarn forward, K. 2 tog., K. to end.

Work 2 more rows in garter st. Cast off.

Work another shoe in same way, working the buttonhole at the opposite end of pin.

Sew on buttons to match buttonholes.

Easy, quick and effective Granny edging for boudoir pillows, parlour cushions, swaying petticoats, lampshades, handkerchiefs and coverlets. Work in silks, cotton perle or wool in hook to correspond.

 

Make a chain of 12 stitches.

First row: 4 dc in the fifth chain from the hook, skip 2 chain stitches, 4 dc in the eighth chain stitch, skip two chain stitches, 3 dc in the last 3 chain stitches, chain 2, 1 dc in the same stitch  of last dc just made, chain 2, turn.

Second row: 4 dc in the space of 2 chain stitches of previous row, chain 2, 3 dc in the next space, chain 2, 4 dc in the middle of 4 dc of previous row, 4 dc in the next 4 dc in previous row, 1 dc in the last space, chain 3, turn.

Third Row: Work shell of 4 dc in shell of last row (there will always be 2 shells throughout the work), chain 2, 3 dc in the space, 3 dc in the next space, chain 2, 1 dc in the same space, chain 2, turn.

On every other row there will be a space more. Continue until there are 5 spaces; chain 2, turn, shell of 5 dc in every space, fasten with a slip stitch in the middle of the 3 dc, then 3 dc, chain 2, shell on shell, chain 3, turn, shell on shell, chain 2, 3 dc in the space, chain 2, 1 dc in the same stitch of last dc just made, chain 2, turn, and repeat from second row.
