MATERIALS
Bonnet:
1 oz 3 ply Nursery Knitting Yarn in Baby Sky
¾ yard ribbon ½ inch wide
Mittens:
1 oz 3 ply Nursery Knitting Yarn in Baby Sky
½ yard narrow ribbon
Shoes:
1 oz 3 ply Nursery Knitting Yarn in Baby Sky
2 small buttons
Knitting Needles:
Bonnet: 1 pair 3.25mm /US 3 /UK 10
Mittens: 1 pair each 3.25mm /US 3 /UK 10 and 2.75 mm/UK 12/ US 2
Shoes: 1 pair 2.75 mm/UK 12/ US 2
UK Terms used
BONNET
Cast on 76 sts. and work in double moss st. as follows:
1st and 2nd rows: * K. 2, P. 2 * repeat * to * to end
3rd and 4th rows: * P. 2, K. 2 * repeat * to * to end
These 4 rows form the pattern. Continue in pattern for 3 inches.
Continue in st.st., keeping 4 sts. at each end of needle in double moss st. until work measures 4½ inches from cast on, ending on a P. row.
To shape crown:
1st row: * K. 9, K. 2 tog. * repeat * to * to last 10 sts., K. 10
2nd and alternate rows: P
3rd row: * K. 8, K. 2 tog. * repeat * to * to end
5th row: * K. 7, K. 2 tog. * repeat * to * to end
7th row: * K. 6, K. 2 tog. * repeat * to * to end
Continue thus, working 1 st. less between decreasings on every K. row until 21 sts. remain.
Break off yarn, leaving a long end. Run this end through remaining sts. twice. Draw up and fasten off securely.
TO MAKE UP
Press work carefully on wrong side with hot iron over a damp cloth.
Sew up back seam as far as the first decreasings. Turn back front corners of
bonnet for about l inch and sew on ribbon slantwise.
MITTENS
Cast on 30 sts. with No. 12 needles.
Work K. 1, P. 1 rib for 1 inch.
Next row: Make holes for ribbon thus: K. 1 * M. 1, K. 2 tog. * repeat * to * to
last st., K. 1.
Change to No. 10 needles.
Next row: K. 15, turn and work 1½ inches in st.st. (1 row K., 1 row P.) on these sts., ending on a P. row.
Decrease for top thus:
1st row: * K. 3, K. 2 tog. * repeat * to* to end
2nd and alternate rows: P
3rd row: * K. 2, K. 2 tog. * repeat * to * to end
5th row: * K. 1, K. 2 tog. * repeat * to * to end
Cast off.
To Complete other half of mitten join in yarn and work on remaining 15 sts. Exactly as given for first half. Cast off.
Work another mitten in the same way.
TO MAKE UP
Press work carefully. Sew up the seams.
Thread ribbon through holes at wrists.
SHOES
Cast on 12 sts. and work in garter st. (every row K. ) increasing 1 st. at each end of every alternate row until 24 sts are on needle.
Take 2 tog. at each end of every alternate row until 12 sts. remain. (This piece is for the sole.)
At the end of last row cast on 6 sts. for heel.
Continue on these 18 sts., keeping the heel edge straight and increasing 1st. at
the other edge on every alternate row (for the toe) until 24 sts. are on needle.
Next row: Cast off 12 sts., K. to end.
Work 13 rows in double moss st. (as given for coat ), on the remaining 12 sts., casting on 12 sts., at the end of last row.
Continue in garter st., keeping heel edge straight, decreasing 1 st. at toe edge on every alternate row until 18 sts. remain.
Cast off.
Sew tog. the two straight edges of heel and sew tog. the edges round the sole, easing in toe.
Straps:
Knit up 16 sts. at heel (8 sts. on each side of join).
Cast on 12 sts. K. back and cast on 12 sts. at other edge.
Work 2 rows in garter st.
Next row: K. 2, yarn forward, K. 2 tog., K. to end.
Work 2 more rows in garter st. Cast off.
Work another shoe in same way, working the buttonhole at the opposite end of pin.
Sew on buttons to match buttonholes.
