Five shades of 3ply or 4ply wool in Fruitie (for head), Scarlet, Yellow, Royal Blue and Green or various scraps from your basket.

Pair of No. UK 14/2.00mm/US 0 steel knitting needles

Yarn and needles can be selected to suit your requirements.


Depth 7½ inches (excluding head)

All round lower edge (un­stretched) 15 inches


9 stitches to 1 inch


Cast on 56 stitches.

1st and 2nd rows: Knit.

Row 3: Purl.

4th and 5th rows: Knit.

Row 6: Purl.

These 6 rows form the ribbed stripe. Repeat them over again, keep­ing this sequence of colours: Scarlet, Yellow, Royal Blue, Yellow, Green, Yellow, Fruitie, Yellow (one colour for each complete stripe) until work measures 7½ inches (unstretched) from cast on edge.

Cast off.

Pick up 2 stitches over each coloured rib, along one short side edge (about 48 stitches.)

With right side facing, rejoin Yellow wool and repeat 1st to 6th rows three times, using Yellow, Scarlet, Yellow, and in each 5th row take 2 together all along row.

Cast off.

Work another piece in same way, using same sequence of colours throughout.


Take the Fruitie wool and wind it 100 times over a piece of cardboard 4 inches wide.

Slip off and wind Scarlet wool tightly round and round 1 inch from top end, and secure firmly. Leave another inch of the black wool and again wind the scarlet wool tightly round and round and secure firmly.

Cut the loops at the top end to make the curly hair, then in the next section work eyes, nose and mouth, using Yellow wool.


Sew up two side seams of cosy, leaving a small hole at the top through which slip the neck end of the head. Sew in securely.


If you prefer to knit a little head instead of a yarn dolly:

Cast on 2 stitches with Fruitie.

Row 1: Knit.

Row 2: Purl twice in each stitch.

Row 3: Knit twice in each stitch.

Row 4: Purl.

Row 5: Knit twice in each stitch.

Row 6: Purl.

Row 7: Knit.

Row 8: (P. 1, p. twice in next stitch) to end of row.

Row 9: Knit.

Row 10: (P. 1, p. twice in next stitch.) to end.

Work a further 20 rows in stocking stitch on these 36 stitches.

Next row: (K. 2 tog.) to end.

Next row: Purl.

Next row: (K. 1, k. 2 tog.) to end.

Next row: Purl.

Next row: (K. 1, k. 2 tog.) to end.

Work 3 rows on remaining 8 stitches.

Finish ends. Leaving neck stitches open seam around head with right sides together. Turn. Fill with soft wool. Embroider features as desired. Attach glass eyes. Hair may be fashioned from Mohair, wavy unspun wool or wig.
