Elsworth Boy’s Set: Jersey, Knickers. Vest
2 ounces 3 ply wool in Jubilee Blue
1 ounce 3 ply Wool in White
Pair 11 UK/3.00 mm/2.5 US Knitting Needles
Pair 9 UK/3.75 mm/5 US Knitting Needles
One 11 UK/3.00 mm Crochet Hook
4 Doll Buttons
1 yard Narrow matte Ribbon
A length of very narrow elastic for the Knickers
The Jersey: Length from top of shoulder to lower edge, 5 inches. Width all round at underarm, 11½ inches
The Knickers: Length of side fold, 5 inches
Using No. 11 needles and Jubilee Blue wool, cast on 42 stitches.
Work in K. 1, P. 1 rib for 8 rows.
Change to No. 9 needles and proceed as follows:
Row 1: Knit.
Row 2: Purl.
Row 3: K.16, (P.2, K.2) twice, P.2, K.16.
Row 4: P.16, (K.2, P.2) twice, K.2, P.16.
Row 5: K.18, P.2, K.2, P.2, K.18.
Row 6: P.18, K.2, P.2, K.2, P.18.
Row 7: K.20, P.2, K.20.
Row 8: P.20, K.2, P.20.
Repeat the 1st and 2nd rows 5 times more.
Shape the Armholes and divide for the Front Opening as follows:
Row 1: Cast off 3 stitches, knit to the end.
Row 2: Cast off 3 stitches, purl the following 17 stitches, there now being 18 stitches on the right-hand needle, turn and work 8 rows in smooth fabric on these stitches for the Right side of the Front.
Shape the Neck by casting off 4 stitches at the beginning of the next row.
Now work 10 rows of smooth fabric on the remaining 14 stitches.
Rejoin the wool to the remaining 18 stitches and work the Left side of the Front to match the side just completed.
Using No. 11 needles and Jubilee Blue wool, cast on 42 stitches
Proceed in K.1, P.1 rib for 8 rows.
Now work 18 rows in smooth fabric (1 row knit, 1 row purl).
Shape the Armholes by casting off 3 stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows.
Now work 20 rows in smooth fabric.
Using No. 9 needles and Jubilee Blue wool, cast on 44 stitches.
Proceed as follows:
Row 1: Knit.
Row 2: Purl.
Row 3: K2tog, knit to the last 2 stitches, K.2 tog.
Row 4: Purl.
Row 5: Knit.
Row 6: P2tog, purl to the last 2 stitches, P.2 tog.
Repeat the last 6 rows twice more, then repeat rows 1-3 inclusive (30 stitches remain).
Change to No. 11 needles and work 6 rows in K.1, P.1 rib.
Work another sleeve in the same manner.
Using No. 9 needles and Jubilee Blue wool, cast on 60 stitches.
Row 1: *K.1, P.1. Repeat from * to the end.
Continue in rib, decreasing 1 stitch at both ends of every following row, until 48 stitches remain.
Stitch the shoulders of the Back and Front together.
Stitch the sleeves into the armholes.
Omitting all ribbing, press the work on the wrong side, using a warm iron and a damp cloth.
Stitch the cast-off edge of the collar round the neck, commencing and finishing at the Front edge.
Stitch the side and sleeve seams.
Attach 2 small buttons on to one side of the front opening and work 2 loops on the opposite side to correspond.
Using No. 11 needles and Blue wool, cast on 40 stitches.
Proceed in K.1, P. 1 rib for 8 rows.
Change to No. 9 needles and work as follows:
Row 1: Purl.
Row 2: K.8, turn.
Row 3: P.8.
Row 4: K.16, turn.
Row 5: P.16.
Row 6: K.24, turn.
Row 7: P.24.
Row 8: K.32, turn.
Row 9: P.32.
Working in smooth fabric, increase 1 stitch at the beginning of the next row, and every follow¬ing 4th row, until 5 increases in all have been worked.
Work 3 rows after the last increase.
Now decrease 1 stitch at both ends of the next row, and every alternate row following, until 3 sets of decreases in all have been worked, and 39 stitches remain.
Next Row: K1 * P1, K.1. Repeat from * to the end.
Next Row: P1 * K1, P.1. Repeat from * to the end.
Repeat the last 2 rows twice more.
Work this to match the Right Leg, the “turns” after the ribbing at the waist being worked on a purl row, and the back increases being worked at the end of the increase rows.
Omitting the ribbing, press the work on the wrong side.
Stitch the leg seams and then stitch the Back and Front seams.
Thread narrow elastic through the ribbing at the waist, enlarging a stitch through which to pass the elastic.

Using No. 9 needles and White wool, cast on 36 stitches
Row 1: * K.2, P.2. Repeat from * to the end.
Repeat the last row 35 times more (36 rows)
Next Row: Cast on 10 stitches. Knit to the end.
Repeat the last row once again (56 stitches now on the needle.)
Continue in garter stitch (every row knitted) for 14 rows.
Next Row: K.18, turn.
Work 3 rows in garter stitch on these 18 stitches.
Rejoin the wool and cast off the following 20 stitches.
Work 4 rows in garter stitch on the remaining 18 stitches.
Work another piece in the same manner for the Back.
Join the side and sleeve seams.
Join the shoulders of the Back and Front together for 1 inch at the armhole end of the work.
Using the crochet hook and White wool, work 1 row of double crochet round the neck.
Attach a press-fastener on to each shoulder to close the neck.
Press all seams.
