MATERIALS

2 ounces 3 ply wool in Jubilee Blue
1 ounce 3 ply Wool in White
Pair 11 UK/3.00 mm/2.5 US Knitting Needles
Pair 9 UK/3.75 mm/5 US Knitting Needles
One 11 UK/3.00 mm Crochet Hook
4 Doll Buttons
1 yard Narrow matte Ribbon
A length of very narrow elastic for the Knickers

MEASUREMENTS

The Jersey: Length from top of shoulder to lower edge, 5 inches. Width all round at underarm, 11½ inches
The Knickers: Length of side fold, 5 inches

JERSEY

FRONT

Using No. 11 needles and Jubilee Blue wool, cast on 42 stitches.
Work in K. 1, P. 1 rib for 8 rows.
Change to No. 9 needles and proceed as follows:
Row 1: Knit.
Row 2: Purl.
Row 3: K.16, (P.2, K.2) twice, P.2, K.16.
Row 4: P.16, (K.2, P.2) twice, K.2, P.16.
Row 5: K.18, P.2, K.2, P.2, K.18.
Row 6: P.18, K.2, P.2, K.2, P.18.
Row 7: K.20, P.2, K.20.
Row 8: P.20, K.2, P.20.
Repeat the 1st and 2nd rows 5 times more.
Shape the Armholes and divide for the Front Opening as follows:
Row 1: Cast off 3 stitches, knit to the end.
Row 2: Cast off 3 stitches, purl the following 17 stitches, there now being 18 stitches on the right-hand needle, turn and work 8 rows in smooth fabric on these stitches for the Right side of the Front.
Shape the Neck by casting off 4 stitches at the beginning of the next row.
Now work 10 rows of smooth fabric on the remaining 14 stitches.
Cast off.
Rejoin the wool to the remaining 18 stitches and work the Left side of the Front to match the side just completed.

BACK
Using No. 11 needles and Jubilee Blue wool, cast on 42 stitches
Proceed in K.1, P.1 rib for 8 rows.
Now work 18 rows in smooth fabric (1 row knit, 1 row purl).
Shape the Armholes by casting off 3 stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows.
Now work 20 rows in smooth fabric.
Cast off.

SLEEVE

Using No. 9 needles and Jubilee Blue wool, cast on 44 stitches.
Proceed as follows:
Row 1: Knit.
Row 2: Purl.
Row 3: K2tog, knit to the last 2 stitches, K.2 tog.
Row 4: Purl.
Row 5: Knit.
Row 6: P2tog, purl to the last 2 stitches, P.2 tog.
Repeat the last 6 rows twice more, then repeat rows 1-3 inclusive (30 stitches remain).
Change to No. 11 needles and work 6 rows in K.1, P.1 rib.
Cast off.
Work another sleeve in the same manner.

COLLAR

Using No. 9 needles and Jubilee Blue wool, cast on 60 stitches.
Row 1: *K.1, P.1. Repeat from * to the end.
Continue in rib, decreasing 1 stitch at both ends of every following row, until 48 stitches remain.
Cast off.

MAKE UP

Stitch the shoulders of the Back and Front together.
Stitch the sleeves into the armholes.
Omitting all ribbing, press the work on the wrong side, using a warm iron and a damp cloth.
Stitch the cast-off edge of the collar round the neck, commencing and finishing at the Front edge.
Stitch the side and sleeve seams.
Attach 2 small buttons on to one side of the front opening and work 2 loops on the opposite side to correspond.

KNICKERS

RIGHT LEG

Using No. 11 needles and Blue wool, cast on 40 stitches.
Proceed in K.1, P. 1 rib for 8 rows.
Change to No. 9 needles and work as follows:
Row 1: Purl.
Row 2: K.8, turn.
Row 3: P.8.
Row 4: K.16, turn.
Row 5: P.16.
Row 6: K.24, turn.
Row 7: P.24.
Row 8: K.32, turn.
Row 9: P.32.
Working in smooth fabric, increase 1 stitch at the beginning of the next row, and every follow¬ing 4th row, until 5 increases in all have been worked.
Work 3 rows after the last increase.
Now decrease 1 stitch at both ends of the next row, and every alternate row following, until 3 sets of decreases in all have been worked, and 39 stitches remain.
Next Row: K1 * P1, K.1. Repeat from * to the end.
Next Row: P1 * K1, P.1. Repeat from * to the end.
Repeat the last 2 rows twice more.
Cast off.

LEFT LEG

Work this to match the Right Leg, the “turns” after the ribbing at the waist being worked on a purl row, and the back increases being worked at the end of the increase rows.

MAKE-UP

Omitting the ribbing, press the work on the wrong side.
Stitch the leg seams and then stitch the Back and Front seams.
Thread narrow elastic through the ribbing at the waist, enlarging a stitch through which to pass the elastic.

VEST

Also suits Elsworth’s sister Marve.

FRONT

Using No. 9 needles and White wool, cast on 36 stitches
Row 1: * K.2, P.2. Repeat from * to the end.
Repeat the last row 35 times more (36 rows)
Next Row: Cast on 10 stitches. Knit to the end.
Repeat the last row once again (56 stitches now on the needle.)
Continue in garter stitch (every row knitted) for 14 rows.
Next Row: K.18, turn.
Work 3 rows in garter stitch on these 18 stitches.
Cast off.
Rejoin the wool and cast off the following 20 stitches.
Work 4 rows in garter stitch on the remaining 18 stitches.
Cast off.
Work another piece in the same manner for the Back.

MAKE UP

Join the side and sleeve seams.
Join the shoulders of the Back and Front together for 1 inch at the armhole end of the work.
Using the crochet hook and White wool, work 1 row of double crochet round the neck.
Attach a press-fastener on to each shoulder to close the neck.
Press all seams.

TENSION

11 ½ stitches and 15 ½ rows with Double Knitting, measured over 2 inches (5cm) in stocking stitch.

NOTE

Join seams neatly on right side and brush White parts lightly with a wire brush for fluffy effect. Carry yarns when not in use loosely up side of work.

BAG

With Pink, cast on 160 stitches.

Knit 4 rows.

Join in Blue and K10 rows.

With Pink, work 4 rows stocking stitch.

Repeat last 14 rows once.

With Blue, K6 rows.

Next row: * K.3, K2 tog., rep. from * to end (128 sts)

K3 rows.

With Pink, work 4 rows stocking stitch.

With Blue, K10 rows.

Repeat last 14 rows twice more.

With Pink, work 4 rows stocking stitch.

With Blue, Next row:  * K6, K2 tog., rep. from * to end (112 sts)

K.1 row.

Next row: * K5, K2 tog., rep. from * to end (96 sts)

Starting with a Purl row, work in stocking stitch as follows:

Increase 1 st. at each end of every row until there are 35 sts.

Work 5 rows, then increase 1 st. at each end of next row.

Repeat last 6 rows twice more (41 sts.).

Work 7 rows.

Next row Work across, decrease 1 st. at each end.

Work 5 rows.

Repeat last 6 rows twice more (35 sts.).

Decrease 1 st. at each end of every row until 17 stitches remain. Cast off.

Stitch base to cast-on edge of bag.

BINDING FOR BACK OPENING (2)

With Blue, cast on 5 stitches. Knit 68 rows. Cast off.

Stitch one piece in position on one side of back opening as a facing.

Stitch other piece to remaining side as a binding. Sew on press studs.

HEAD (2 PIECES)

With White, cast on 14 sts. K3 rows.

K1 row, inc. 1 st. at end.

K1 row, inc. 1 st. at beg.

K1 row, inc. 1 st. at each end.

K1 row.

K1 row, inc. 1 st. at end.

K1 row, inc. 1 st. at beg.

Repeat last 2 rows twice more.

K9 rows.

K1 row. decrease 1 st. at each end.

K1 row, decrease 1 st. at end.

K1 row, decrease 1 st. at beg.

Repeat last 2 rows 3 times more.

Decrease 1 st. at each end of next 3 rows. Cast off.

GUSSET

With White, cast on 3 stitches. K5 rows.

K1 row, increase 1 st. at each end.

Repeat last 6 rows until there are 15 sts.

K5 rows.

K1 row, decrease 1 st. at each end.

K3 rows.

Repeat last 4 rows until 3 sts. remain.

K6 rows. Cast off.

Stitch Gusset in position between halves of Head, with cast-on edge at nose. Sew remaining seam. Stuff, then gather and draw up neck opening.

Embroider features as in photograph, using Green for eyes and Black for remainder.

EARS (2)

With White, cast on 6 sts.

K3 rows.

K1 row, inc. in 1st, 3rd, 4th and last sts.

Cast off.

Fold in half and stitch side edges together.

BASE

With White, cast on 3 sts.

K1 row.

Next 2 rows K., inc. 1 st. at each end.

K3 rows.

Next 2 rows K., decrease 1 st. at each end.

Cast off.

Stitch to cast-on edge of Body and stuff. Sew Head to other end. Stitch Body to top of Case, then stitch Paws in position as in photograph.

TIE

With Blue, cast on 4 stitches.

Work in garter-stitch (every row K.) for 20 inches (51 cm).

Cast off.

Tie round neck.
