How Attractive Our Twins Look In Their New Flower Sprigged Nightdresses

The little flowers are of lazy-daisy loops with a straight stitch for the tiny leaf.

A small ball of 2ply fingering wool in white
A pair of No. 14 knitting needles
A few yards of stranded cotton or
Silk in pink and green
2 tiny buttons

To Work

Begin at the lower edge by casting on 80 stitches with white wool and No. 14 needles and work 6 rows in stocking stitch.

7th Row: *K. 9, p. 1; repeat from * until 10 remain, K.10.

Work 5 rows in stocking stitch, beginning and ending with a purl row.

13th Row: *K. 4, * p. 1, k. 9; repeat from * until 6 remain, p. 1, k. 5.

Work 4 rows in stocking stitch.

18th Row: All purl.

Repeat from the 7th to the 18th row twice more, then work the 7th row again.

Work 5 rows in stocking stitch.

Decrease Row: K. 2 tog. all along the row. (40 sts.)

Work 5 rows in stocking stitch.

To Shape The Armholes

 Next Row: K. 4, p. 1, k. 4,

Cast off 3 (1 st. on needle), k. 6. p. 1, k. 7, cast off 3, k. 3, p. 1, k. 5.

The Right Back

Work 8 rows straight in stocking stitch on the last 10 sts.

To Shape The Neck

Cast off 5 sts. at the beginning of the next row, work 1 row straight; then cast off the remaining 5 sts.

The Front

 Rejoin wool to wrong side of centre 15 sts. and work 5 rows straight.

Next Row: K. 2, p. 1, k. 9, p. 1, k. 2.

Purl 1 row.

To Shape The Neck

Cast off 4 sts. at the beginning of the next row, work 1 row straight, then cast off the remaining 5 sts.

The Right Front Shoulder

 Working on these last 6 stitches, decrease 1 st. at the neck edge of the next row, then work 2 rows straight. Cast off.

The Left Front Shoulder

 Rejoin wool to wrong side of remaining 6 sts. and work as for the Right Front Shoulder.

The Left Back

Rejoin wool to wrong side of remaining 9 sts. and work 7 rows in stocking stitch, beginning and ending with a purl row.

To Shape The Neck

Cast off 4 sts. at the beginning of the next row, work 1 row straight, then cast off the remaining 5 sts.

The Sleeves

Cast on 12 sts. and work 2 rows in single rib.

Increase Row: To increase knit into front then back of stitch (Increase, k. 1) 5 times, (inc.) twice. (19 sts.)

Purl 1 row.

Knit 1 row.

Purl 1 row.

4th Row: K. 9, p. 1, k. 9.

Work 5 rows in stocking stitch.

10th Row: K. 4, p. 1, k. 9, p. 1, k. 4.

Work 5 rows in stocking stitch, then work the 4th row again.

To Shape The Sleeve Top

Dec. 1 st. at each end of the next 5 rows.

Cast off the remaining 9 sts.

Work another sleeve in the same way.

The Collar

Cast on 15 stitches and work 3 rows in moss stitch. Cast off.

Make another piece in the same way.

To Make Up The Nightdress

Press lightly on the wrong side with a hot iron over a damp cloth. With pink silk, work a flower consisting of four lazy-daisy loops on each purl st. of the pattern, then, beginning with (he first row of flowers, work a stem, consisting of 2 stem stitches, between the top two petals of each flower and sloping to the left. On the next row, work the stems sloping to the right. Continue in this way, sloping the stems in opposite directions on each alternate embroidered row.

Join the centre back seam to within one inch of the waist. Join the shoulder seams, then set sleeves into armholes and join sleeve scams.

Sew the two pieces of the collar to the neck edge, so that they meet at the centre front. Sew 2 buttons to the left side of the back opening and make 2 button loops on the right side to correspond.

MATERIALS

A ball of 2 ply fingering in white

A pair of No. 14 knitting needles

A steel crochet hook No. 3

A short length of bead elastic

ABBREVIATIONS

knit plain ; p., purl; st., stitch; tog., together; inc., increase (by working into the back and front of the same stitch); dec., decrease (by working 2 sts. tog.) s.s., stocking stitch (k. on the right side and p. back); single rib is k. 1 and p. 1 alternately; m.s., moss stitch * (k. 1 and p. 1 alternately and on subsequent rows the sts. are reversed); garter st. is knit plain on every row; double crochet. Directions in brackets are worked the number of times stated after the last bracket.

TO WORK

 Cast on 20 sts. and work 30 rows in single rib, working into the backs of the sts. on the 1st row to give a neat edge.

Now divide the stitches for the neck and shoulders as follows:

 Next row

 Rib 8, and leave these sts. on a safety pin until required for second shoulder, cast off 4, rib to end. (8 sts. for first shoulder).

The First Shoulder To Shape the Armhole

 Cast off 3 sts. at the beginning of the next row, then dec. 1 st. at the beginning of the following alternate row (4 sts.)

Rib 17 rows.

Inc. 1 st. at the beginning of the next row, work 1 row straight, then cast on 3 sts. at the beginning of the following row.

Break off wool and leave these 8 sts. on a safety-pin until required.

The Second Shoulder

 Rejoin wool to wrong side of 8 sts. left on safety-pin for second shoulder and rib 1 row, then work as for First Shoulder but do not break off wool. Turn and cast on 4, turn, and on to the same needle, rib the 18 sts. from First Shoulder. (20 sts.)

Rib 30 rows, then cast off in rib.

The Neck Edging

 With crochet hook, si. st. into the beginning of one shoulder, * 3 ch., miss 1 St., si st. into next st.; repeat from * all round. Fasten off.

The Armhole Edging

st. into 1st st. of one armhole, * 3 ch., miss 1 St., si. st. into next st.; repeat from * all round. Fasten off. Work an edging round the other armhole in the same way.

To Make Up The Vest

Do not press. Join the side seams.

THE KNICKERS

Cast on 20 sts.

1st row * K. 1 into the back of the st., p. 1; repeat from * to end.

2nd row K. 1, ( k. 2 tog.) 9 times, p. 1.

3rd row K. 1, p. 1, * pick up and k. the loop which lies between the sts., p. 1; repeat from * to end. (20sts)

Work 4 rows in s.s., then inc. 1 st. at each end of the next row and following 4th row. (24 sts )

Work 3 rows straight.

To Shape the Legs

Dec. 1 st. at each end of the next 9 rows. ( 6 sts.)

Work 4 rows straight, then inc. 1 st. at each end of the next 9 rows.

Work 4 rows straight, then dec. 1 st. at each end of the next row and following 4th row.

Work 3 rows straight. Repeat the 2nd and 3rd rows, then rib 1 row. Cast off in rib.

The Leg Edging

 With right side of work facing, pick up and k. 19 sts. evenly from along the edge of one leg. Work 1 row in rib.

2nd row K. 1, p. 1, * m. 1, k. 1, p. 1; repeat from * until 1 st. remains, k. 1.

3rd row P. 1, k. 1, p. 1, * k. 2 tog. p. 1; repeat from * to end.

Cast off in rib.

With crochet hook, slip. st. into 1st St., * 3 ch., miss 1 St., slip. st. into next st. repeat from * to end. Fasten off. Work an edging on the other leg in the same way.

TO MAKE UP THE KNICKERS

Press lightly on the wrong side with a hot iron over a damp cloth. Join the side seams. Thread elastic through slots at waist and tie to fit the doll.

THE PETTICOAT

Cast on 26 sts. loosely and work 6 rows in s.s.

Dec. 1 st. at each end of the next row and following 6th row, then work 5 rows straight.

Dec. row K. 2, * k. 2 tog., k. 3 ; repeat from * to end. (18 sts.)

Work 9 rows in s.s., beginning and ending with a p. row.

Now divide the sts. for neck and shoulders as follows:

 Next row: K. 7, and leave these sts. on a safety-pin, cast off 4, k. to end. ( 7 sts. for first shoulder)

The First Shoulder: Cast off 3 sts. at the beginning of the next row, then dec. 1 st. at the beginning of the following alternate row. Work 17 rows in s.s. Inc. 1 st. at the beginning of the next row, work 1 row straight, then cast on 3 sts. at the beginning of the next row.

Break off wool and leave these 7 sts. on a safety-pin.

The Second Shoulder: Rejoin wool to wrong side of other 7 sts., and p. 1 row, then work as for First Shoulder, but do not break off wool. Turn and cast on 4 sts., turn, and on to the same needle work 7 sts. from First Shoulder. ( 18 sts ) Work 9 rows in s.s., beginning and ending with a p. row.

Inc. row K. 2, * inc., k. 3 ; repeat from * to end. (22 sts.)

Work 5 rows in s.s., then inc. 1 st. at each end of the next row and following 6th row. ( 26 sts ) Work 5 rows straight. Cast off.

Work the neck edging and armhole edging as for the Vest.

The Lower Edging: First join one side seam. Pick up and k. 53 sts. all round the lower edge, then work as for the Leg Edging of Knickers.

TO MAKE UP THE PETTICOAT

 Press as for knickers. Join the remaining side seams.
